Role Overview
The Public Relations Intern will be a part of the Communications team. The intern will assist the leadership team and senior staff by performing entry-level media relations and outreach duties. This role focuses on elevating the organization’s public profile by securing media appearances for our founder, Alex, and coordinating local community engagement for our live events.
The volunteer may attend weekly staff meetings, regularly scheduled meetings with their supervisor, and bi-weekly meetings with other interns for professional development.
Responsibilities
Possible role responsibilities include one or more of the following areas:
- Media Pitching: Research and reach out to producers and hosts to get Alex featured on podcasts, local TV news segments, and radio shows.
- Event Outreach: Coordinate local outreach efforts to fill guest seating at upcoming events by inviting community leaders, local influencers, and relevant organizations.
- Media Research: Identify new media opportunities and maintain an organized database of press contacts, podcast hosts, and news desks.
- Lead Generation: Search for like-minded associations and local groups to invite to speeches and events.
- Content Creation: Use ChatGPT to draft compelling pitch letters, press releases, and targeted email “blasts” for media and event promotion.
- Relationship Management: Follow up on outreach activities via email and phone calls to secure bookings and guest confirmations.
- Administrative Support: Update internal records and media kits to ensure all outward-facing information is accurate and professional.
- Strategy Assistance: Assist in creating PR outreach strategies to increase brand awareness and mission impact.
Qualifications
- Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
- Excellent persuasive writing and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and maintain persistence when following up with media outlets.
- Interest in journalism, communications, or public relations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
