An Invitation-Only Weekend with the Founder

Event Description:

Summer at the Lake with because I said I would is a private, invitation-only weekend created for some of the closest supporters of the because I said I would movement — including dedicated donors, volunteers, and friends who have helped this mission grow over the years.

Hosted at Lakeside Chautauqua in Marblehead, Ohio, this relaxed summer gathering offers the opportunity to step away from the pace of everyday life and spend meaningful time with others who believe in the power of promises, accountability, and service.

To preserve the intimate nature of the experience, the weekend is limited to 20 families from our community of supporters. Each invited family is welcome to extend one invitation to another family they would like to bring along to experience the mission and community of because I said I would.

Guests will enjoy time exploring the Lakeside community, participating in a meaningful volunteer project, sharing a dinner together, and hearing inspiring reflections from Alex Sheen, founder of because I said I would.

The weekend is intentionally relaxed and lightly structured so families and friends can enjoy the many amenities and traditions that make Lakeside a beloved summer destination while connecting with others who care deeply about this work.

While the cost of attending this weekend has been kept intentionally minimal to make the gathering accessible, the heart of this experience is supporting the mission of because I said I would. Guests will have the opportunity to learn more about the work being done around the world and those who feel inspired are always welcome to help further the mission.

Side Note:
Before and after this weekend, Alex will be leading a youth camp at Lakeside focused on resiliency skills and mental health habits. Lakeside Chautauqua generously provided this weekend gathering opportunity in appreciation for Alex’s time working with young people in their programs.

Inspiring Reflections from Alex Sheen

During our shared dinner on Saturday evening, Alex Sheen will offer inspiring thoughts on resilience, commitment, and the promises that shape our lives. Through personal stories and reflections from the global because I said I would movement, Alex will share lessons about perseverance, character, and the power of keeping your word.

A Meaningful Volunteer Project

Guests will participate in a hands-on volunteer project together. Families will help create memorial frames for grieving families who have experienced tragic loss and write letters of encouragement to individuals participating in because I said I would programs. This simple project allows everyone to contribute to the mission in a tangible and heartfelt way.

A Fun Family Recreation Experience

Guests will also enjoy a lighthearted group recreation activity designed for families and friends to relax, laugh, and spend time together. The specific activity will be announced closer to the event.

Outside of the shared activities, guests are free to explore the many experiences available throughout Lakeside Chautauqua, including:
